2025 Plunge
How we got here.
In 2024, I set out to celebrate Spark Cycling's 3rd birthday by raising money for the ALS Clinic at Mid Coast Hospital. Over two years, we've raised $84,000 for the Patient Assistance Fund. My dad, Dr. Nick Hyde, a retired surgeon at Mid Coast, was diagnosed with ALS in 2023 and passed away ten days before last year's event. In his honor, the endowed fund now bears his name, continuing his legacy of care for patients and families in Maine.
ALS has no cure and limited treatment options. I watched my dad — a lifelong athlete who could never sit still — lose the use of his hands, his mobility, and eventually his ability to breathe. Funds raised through our event support access to specialists, adaptive equipment, and essential resources. Past contributions have enabled purchases like foldable wheelchairs — the kind that fit in the back of a car — which for someone with ALS can mean the difference between being housebound and continuing to participate in life.
This event is cathartic for me and my family — a chance to channel grief into action. My hope is that we can make a small difference for other families in Maine. I hope you'll join us on Plunge day, whether that means donating, plunging, volunteering, or just showing up to cheer — it takes a village.
With love and gratitude,
Britt
Ways to Participate
-
Option 1: Ride
Take a (free!) class on May 9th, donate, and hop in the tub! Classes will open for booking on Sunday, May 3rd at 10am for membership holders and 12pm for all others. Spark is pledging $5 for each rider-plunge plus $5 for every additional minute they stay in 😉 (5 minute max)
-
Option 2: Register
Register your fundraising page and ask friends and family to support you. Prefer to give directly? We're happy to take that too.
-
Option 3: Show up
Show up on May 9th, make a donation, get in that tub 👏🏻
-
Option 4: Volunteer
Cold plunging not your thing? We need volunteers! Help us get things set-up, broken down, and everything in between.
Last, but not least.
Know that everything you do each day to support the studio is the best kind of support you can offer Britt. Many of you have met her dad, Nick, either at the studio or around the Bath/Brunswick area so this event may hold some additional weight. The future is uncertain but Britt, Nick, and their family know that the Spark community will rally to make Plunge for the Funds an incredible event 💙💚
